Learn Minesweeper

Five short steps, easiest first. Each is a quick lesson, a worked example on a real board, then three small boards to practice on. Finish a step’s three boards to unlock the next. No step ever asks you to guess.

Start with Reading Numbers →

  1. 1Reading NumbersEvery number is a count of the mines touching it. Two moves follow from that.A number counts the mines in the 8 cells around it. Full of flags: open the rest. As many hidden cells as mines: flag them all.
  2. 21-1 PatternTwo numbers, one mine between them, and a safe cell for free. When one number’s mine must sit in cells a neighbor number also touches, it counts for both: the neighbor’s other cells are safe.
  3. 31-2 PatternWhen the shared cells can’t hold enough mines, the rest go outside them. When the cells two numbers share can’t hold all the bigger number needs, the rest are mines in its other cells.
  4. 4Corners & EndgameIn the last corner of the board, count the mines that are left.Use the mine counter: when the numbers you see need every mine left, all other hidden cells are safe, even corners no number touches.
  5. 5Flag or RevealFlag what’s proved, open what’s proved, and nothing else.Every move is proved: flag only certain mines, open only certain safe cells, and chord a number once its flags are right.
